Scope and Contents

A resource collection of correspondence and photographs, clippings, pamphlets, periodicals, graphics, and type foundry specimen books. The collection assembled over 60 years by graphic artist Sol Malkoff demonstrates the principles of good calligraphy, typography, graphic design, and book design.

Arranged by subject. Most file folders retain the subject headings established by Sol Malkoff.

Biographical or Historical Information

Sol Malkoff was born in Chicago in 1918. A typographer and calligrapher, he moved to Central Florida in 1976. A past president of the Typographers Association of New York and a life member of the Type Directors Club of New York, Malkoff began assembling his collection of books on type design and printing in 1939, when he became a composing room compositor-linotype apprentice. He was associated with leading printers and typographers in Chicago, Atlanta, New York and Orlando. A cofounder of the Typography Shop in Atlanta, he pioneered the concept of a type house producing photoprocess hand lettering. Malkoff wrote and lectured on typography and taught typographic design and calligraphy. He died on January 17, 2001, survived by his wife Sadie.

Sol Malkoff's correspondence, photographs, research, and collected materials including over a hundred typography and font specimens.

Method of Acquisition

Sol Malkoff and his family donated his collection to the UCF Art Department in 1999. Printing equipment and type was retained by the Art Department, while his books and paper materials were given transferred to the UCF Libraries in 1999 (CFM1999_01).
